THE FIELD GUIDE

Like Father, Like Son Walkthrough

Follow Pieter uphill to the ruined training ground and finish the conversation after sparring. Losing the bout can still complete the quest. Afterwards, read Charge Manual in your inventory; learning Charge is a separate purchase at a Road Shrine.

Before you leave with Pieter

Like Father, Like Son continues the early Laslea Glen sequence after Withering Away. Its two objectives are Follow Pieter and Train with Pieter. If you are still collecting medicine for Esme, finish that errand first.

Check that your sword is equipped before heading out. Training Sword is available in the family home, and the weapon guide shows the room and equipment steps. Keep a separate manual save if you want to return to this point.

Follow the path around the rocks

Stay on Pieter’s route from the family home to the ruins. A quest marker can indicate a point along the route rather than a place you can reach in a straight line. If a house or rock wall blocks the way, follow the path around it.

  1. Leave the house and take the road beside it to the uphill trail.
  2. Follow the trail around the rocks until you reach the ledge where the route continues above you.
  3. Move close to that ledge, hold forward and jump. On the captured keyboard bindings, W + Space climbed this step; pressing jump while standing back from it did not.
  4. Once on top, rejoin Pieter and continue through the stone passage and up the stairs into the ruined training area.

If you get stuck at the ledge

Line up with the ledge used by the path and move into it as you jump. The successful climb was at this particular route obstacle; an arbitrary rock face beside it may not offer the same climb. If you changed controls, use your current forward and jump bindings.

As you approach training, watch the time bar and the hourglass beside the objective. A flashing bar warns that entering some activities can spend the displayed time without another confirmation. Check the cost before stepping into the encounter.

Train with Pieter and finish the conversation

Use the bout to practise attacks, defensive actions and movement. When the enemy target indicator turns red for an unblockable attack, dodge instead of trying to block it. The tutorial appears during Pieter’s lesson.

If you want to review the difference between Omniblock, directional blocks and Perfect Blocks, use the combat guide. The buttons shown in a tutorial follow the active control setup; check your bindings if the quoted keyboard input differs.

Do you have to beat Pieter?

You can complete this quest after losing the sparring bout. In the verified route, the fight moved into a conversation with Pieter, and the completed journal later showed both Follow Pieter and Train with Pieter checked.

The dialogue route used for this completion was “They need your military experience.” followed by “It’s about time we stand up for ourselves.” These attitude answers come before the separate choice to leave or wait for the mass.

Continue the post-training conversation and choose how to leave. Do not reload just because you lost if your aim is to finish the lesson. This route also led to Charge Manual; a different reward for winning has not been established here.

Leave now or wait until the mass?

The ending dialogue gives you a normal farewell and an option to stay with Pieter until the mass. Choose the farewell if you want to continue doing things in the village before that appointment.

The screenshot below was taken at Noon. “See you then.” displayed one time segment; “I’ll wait with you. [Skip time until the mass]” displayed six. The farewell was followed through to Afternoon. Six is the wait shown at that moment, so check the value in your own dialogue instead of treating it as a fixed cost from any starting time.

Turn Charge Manual into a learned ability

After the training conversation, check Inventory for Charge Manual. Reading it opens Against the Khan’s Horde, Part 1 and removes the manual from the inventory. That gives access to the ability’s learning requirements; it does not spend a skill point or equip Charge for you.

Three separate steps from the book to using Charge
  1. Read the manual

Open Charge Manual in Inventory. The book can leave the inventory after you read it.

  2. Learn at a shrine

Go to a Road Shrine and check Charge in Character. Rank 1 is listed at 1 skill point and 1 time segment.

  3. Equip the ability

Once learned, add Charge in Active Abilities so it is available for combat.

Confirm completion before choosing your next task

Open Journal and check Completed Quests for Like Father, Like Son. Both Follow Pieter and Train with Pieter should be checked. Use that entry to distinguish the finished training from a new objective that has appeared.

After the farewell route, Someone Needs a Lesson was available to track, while Sacred Covenant still concerned returning for the mass. Those are later objectives. If you ended training badly hurt, check your health before setting off.
